China launched（发射）its seventh manned spaceflight on the morning of June 17th. The spacecraft,

Shenzhou XII, was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China’s Gobi Desert.

Shenzhou XII carries three astronauts. They are Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo. The three

astronauts will spend three months inside the spacecraft, the first, and central, section of China’s space station,

named Tiangong. They will finish some tasks and do experiments in Tianhe. Tianhe is the biggest and heaviest

spacecraft China has ever constructed（建造）.

Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo’s work will enable the China Manned Space Agency to have

more experience to prepare for the next steps in its construction.

One of the astronauts Tang Hongbo is from Xiangtan, Hunan. He is a son of farmers. He had a dream of flying

into the space when he was a child. He loved sports when he was in high school and he was very good at playing

basketball. Right after high school, he chose to go to a military academy（军校）. He worked really hard, as he

did when he was a young child. He never said he was tired of the training at school. In 2010, he became an

astronaut. And his dream came true on June 17, 2021! It is his first flight to the space. His parents hope he will

enjoy his journey in the space. All the family members are proud of him.

China’s first Mars rover (火星巡视器), Zhurong, drove down to the Martian surface at 10:40 a.m. (Beijing

Time), May 22 and started exploring (探索), leaving the first mark of China on the red planet. It marched 0.522

meters on the surface of Mars to mark the important date.

Zhurong looks like a beautiful blue butterfly (蝴蝶). It is 3.3 meters long, 3.2 meters wide and 1.85 meters

high. It has a three-Martian day cycle: first day for environmental perception (感知环境), second day for

movement, and the last for scientific exploration.

Because of the bad Martian environment, Zhurong can work only one to two hours each time. It has to face a

number of difficulties in order to work on Mars, such as the bad sunlight, low temperature, bad Earth-Mars

communication and sand storms. For example, Zhurong cannot be controlled in real time. That makes its

communication with the Earth really hard. The temperature on Mars falls below -130℃ a night. It’s also a huge

challenge for Zhurong. What’s more, the wind on Mars could reach 180 meters a second, which is more than three

times faster than a super typhoon (台风) on Earth. Such winds could start huge sand storms. These sand storms

make Zhurong’s work harder. To deal with these difficulties, Zhurong works by itself for most of the time.
