I always wanted to look like the slim girls on TV even though I knew that it was impossible. I worried about
my weight and tried every new diet I read about online. I tried no-fat low fat 5: 2. Only bananas, no bananas I
almost went bananas, too.
Then I read an article that said instead of asking “Am I fat?” I should be asking “Am I fit?” I had no idea a
letter could make such a difference! Once I started thinking about fitness rather than weight, things began to
change. Instead of saying “I want to lose three kilos”, I would say “I want to run two kilometres in eight minutes”
or I want to be able to do 30 push-up”. Rather than cutting out the foods I enjoyed, I added healthy foods to my
meals. I could still have a burger now and then, but I would add a salad or an apple.
Finally, I stopped comparing myself with actresses and models and looking for things that were wrong with
my face or body. Instead, I made a list of the things I liked about myself.

The actor Christopher Reeve is best known as the star of four Superman movies. However, something terrible
happened to him on May 27, 1995. His head landed first and badly hurt when he was thrown from his horse in an
accident.
Reeve’s life was saved by doctors, but the fighting against his hard life just began. As an actor, he would
never be able to feel anything below his neck, breathe without help from a machine or do any physical activity on
his own again.
During this time, Reeve felt like he had lost all hope. He wished that he was dead and even thought of ending
his own life. It was only because of the support of his wife, family and fiends that he found the hope and courage
to live again.
Reeve put his heart into learning everything he could about his injuries. He took lots of exercises. Reeve
never met his goal of getting back on his feet, but he made great progress. Shortly after, he managed to return to
his film work by directing, producing and even starring in films. He also wrote a book about his experience and
returned to his charity work. Reeve became an energetic supporter for disabled people and raised money in
support of medical research. What I do is based on powers we all have inside us and you don’t have to be a
‘superman’ to do it.” His attitude encouraged many people who were stuck in illness. “With the progress of new
medical research, I’m confident that people like me would be able to walk again one day. So you can see. I’m too
busy with living to think of giving up!”
His ten-year-long fighting came to an end on October 10, 2004, at the age of 52. His active performance for
the disabled proved more superhuman than anything that could be dreamed up for the big screen.

I’m a rather smart person who has spent nearly 10 years learning mechanics (机械学), but I have no
formal education. I have always struggled to make people trust me.
This year, I started another factory job, which provided a bit higher pay than my last one. I was making $13.
50 an hour at my last job and hardly make a living. I felt I would probably live a better life! My neighbor bought a
used Harley motorcycle that everyone thought it had some serious damage. After taking a look at it, I said that I
would be able to repair it. As a result, I saved them $2, 000 that they expected to pay to rebuild it. They were
impressed with my work and told many of their friends about me. I got a lot of new business just through word of
mouth.
In about two months I had over a dozen people coming to me for work and I was making great money. I was
making thousands a month from part-time jobs on a good month. But because of the instability of the work, it was
not certain for me to get enough money every month, I still couldn’t leave my day job at that point.
Then I got a job through one of my customers working on heavy equipment and diesel trucks
. I was able to impress them by solving difficult problems quickly. They offered me another job that started
even higher - $17 an hour. I finally made some progress.
In one years time I went from being the lowest level worker to having bosses ask me to work for them. Now
I can honestly say I feel truly proud of myself and my skills.

2020·江苏·滨海县教师发展中心一模)阅读短文并简要回答下列问题(每题答案不超过 5个词)
The sun was falling behind the hills. Andrea was driving back home to Brockboune. Then she saw an old
lady, standing by the road, with a sign saying “Brockboune” in her hand.
Andrea stopped the car. When the old lady got in, Andrea could see that she was not that little. She was in a
long dress and had a hat pulled down low over her eyes. She put her big brown shopping bag down onto the floor.
“Do you live in Brockboune?” asked Andrea. “No, dear,” answered the old lady in a low voice, “I’m just
going to visit a friend, but my car won’t start, so I had to hitchhike (搭便车).”
Something in the way the lady spoke made Andrea uneasy. Andrea secretly studied the half-covered face, the
shapeless body, the arms with their thick black hairs…Thick black hairs? Andrea’s blood froze. This wasn’t a
woman. It was a man!
Her heart was beating wildly and her mind raced. Then suddenly, an idea came up to her. She stopped the car
in a sudden. “My God!” she shouted, “A child! Did you see the child? I think I hit her!”
“I didn’t see anything,” the “old lady” said. “I don’t think you hit anything.”
