A
In a small village, a little boy lived with his parents. He was the only son. He used to get
angry very easily and hurt others with his words. His friends and neighbours avoided
him, and his parents were really worried about him.
His parents advised him many times to control his anger(怒气) and be kind. Unluckily, it
didn’t work. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea.
One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails(钉子) and asked the boy to hit one nail on the board every time
he became angry. The little boy found it interesting and accepted the task.
Every time he got angry, he ran to the board and hit a nail. His anger drove him to hit nails on the board 30
times on the first day! After the next few days, the boy hit fewer nails on the board. The little boy found it very
difficult to hit the nails and decided to control his anger. Slowly, the number of nails hit on the board was reduced
half.
One day, the boy didn’t hit any nails because he didn’t lose control at all that day. Then, his father told him to
take a nail away from the board each time he controlled his anger. A few days passed and the boy was able to pull
out most of the nails from the board. However, there remained a few nails that he could not pull out.
The father asked him, pointing to a hole, “What do you see here?”
The boy replied, “A hole in the board!”
The father told the boy, “The nails were your anger and they were hit on people. You can take the nails away but
the holes in the board will remain. The board will never look the same. It has scars( 痕迹) all over. Some nails
cannot even be pulled out. Your angry words were like that! Use friendly words. Use them to show the love and
kindness in your heart!”
