Ellie was a skilled gymnast (体操运动员). She could jump higher than her height. But she liked showing off (炫耀).
When she tried out for the gymnastics team, She put on a perfect performance. “See if you can do that!” She said proudly.
The next Friday, the list was posted announcing (宣布) who had made the team. Ellie’s name wasn’t on it. “It’s unfair.
I’m better than all the other girls!” she said. She went to see the coach.
“You are quite talented, but your attitude (态度) is terrible,” the coach said.
“I have the attitude of a winner,” Ellie shouted.
“Making the gymnastics (体操) team isn’t just about gymnastics,” the coach explained. “It’s also about being on a
team.”
That night Ellie complained to her parents. Her mother was angry, but her father said that the coach had a point. They
had a big argument. Ellie couldn’t sleep. She kept thinking about what the coach had said.
Ellie could not stay away from the gym, so she practiced alone. One day, after watching Ann fall off the parallel bars
(双杠) again and again, Ellie ran to her and explained to Ann what she was doing wrong. Ann did as Ellie suggested and
improved. Ellie did not notice the coach was looking at her. Over the next few months, Ellie always helped the other girls.
They did better and better and won many competitions. “We couldn’t have done this without Ellie’s help,” the girls said.
The following year, Ellie tried out for the gymnastics team again. This time, she was modest. When the girls praised

On May 6, a 30-member Chinese survey team set out to reach the top of Qomolangma, with the latest technology to
measure (测量) the mountain’s snow cap.
In 1856, a British survey team measured the height of Qomolangma. The result showed Qomolangma reached a height
of 8,840 meters above sea level. However, the exact measurement of the world’s highest mountain has never been settled. In
1955, the height by an Indian survey team was 8,848 meters, and later to 8,850 meters according to a US team in 1999.
Measuring Qomolangma is no easy task. The average air temperature there is -29°C, and hurricane-like winds blow all
he time. According to Li Guopeng from the Chinese survey team, although we have the likes of robots and drones, it’s
uncertain that they can operate well under poor conditions, which is why sending human experts is still necessary.
But does a difference of a few meters really matter when it comes to the mountain?
The truth is that measuring the height of Qomolangma is much more than just getting one number. At the point where
the Eurasian plate meets the Indian plate, Mount Qomolangma came from an ocean 38 million years ago as a result of the
two plates colliding. It makes it the perfect window for observing crustal (地壳的) movements. Changes to the peak’s height
can tell us whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other.
It might be true that setting a dispute (争论) was the driving force for continued exploration, but the good thing is that
we always end up discovering so much more.
( )23.What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.Many countries tried to measure Qomolangma.
B.The height of Qomolangma increases each year.
C.There is no agreement on the height of Qomolangma.
D.There is no commonly accepted way of measuring Qomolangma.
( )24.What is the biggest challenge for the Chinese survey team to measure Qomolangma?
A.Poor conditions. B.The pressure from other experts.
C.The shortage of the latest technologies. D.The crustal movements.
( )25.The underlined word “colliding” in the passage means “________” in Chinese.
A.分离 B.沉没 C.碰撞 D.喷发
( )26.What does measuring the height of Qomolangma mean to China?
A.It can show the world China’s new technologies.
B.It can help the world solve disagreements in science.
C.It can help scientists explore the history of Qomolangma.
D.It can help scientists get information on crustal movements.

A new study finds that plants communicate with one another to warn of danger.
We may all think that plants don’t move or make sounds. However, plants talk to each other all the time. And the
language is chemical.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants give out chemicals into the air to help neighboring
plants. These chemical warnings can spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation(虫害), so other plants can
protect themselves. But how plants receive and act on the information exactly is still mysterious.
In this week’s Science Magazine, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They have found one chemical
message and followed it all the way from beginning to end.
The researchers looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest(害虫). To start out, they grew plants in two separate
plastic spaces connected by a tube. One plant was infested and placed upwind and the other was uninfested and placed
downwind. The downwind plant was later exposed(使暴露) to the pest. The results showed that plants near sick neighbors
before were able to protect themselves better against the pest.
The researchers also studied leaves from the plants. They found one chemical called Hex Vic appeared more often in
the exposed plants. It can help kill pests. Researchers then made sure that uninfested plants could fight off pests and
diseases. They are warned to make protection first by their friendly plant neighbors.
