Even though I just had lunch not long ago, I was feeling hungry again. I went to the kitchen to look for
something to eat. That was when I discovered the pudding in the fridge. It was made from milk, sugar, eggs and
fruits, and it looked so yummy. I noticed that there was only one left.
I was putting the pudding on a plate when my brother came into the kitchen. He found the pudding and asked
for it. “It’s mine! I was the only one who found it!”I shouted.“You are my elder brother. You should give it to
me!”said he. Then he started pulling the plate towards himself and I did the same.
Suddenly, the plate moved to one side and the pudding slipped(滑动)out of the plate. It landed on the floor and
turned into a yellow mess. My brother and I both looked at each other, feeling amazed and disappointed at the same
time. It was such a waste!
To my surprise, Ollie, our pet dog, walked over to the mess on the floor. It began to lap up the pudding happily.
Within minutes, the mess on the floor was gone. Ollie licked(舔)its lips when it was done.
After watching Ollie finishing the whole pudding by itself, we realized . If both of us had shared the
pudding, we would both have got to eat half of it. It was because of our greed(贪婪)that we ended up with nothing.
That day, my brother and I learnt a good lesson.

I think it is safe to say that snakes are not popular among most people. It would be hard to find a person who is
neutral(中立的),or simply doesn't care one way or the other. What I wonder is why something even without legs
causes such great fear.
Snakes are quite useful, but that doesn't seem to matter.Snakes help control the population of mice.Without
snakes, perhaps we would find mice everywhere. Most of us,however, would rather see a mouse than a snake.
The poison argument( 毒 性 的 争 论 )is a strong one.Some snakes are poisonous,and this causes people's
death. However, the poisonous snakes are only a small number. We can't say all the snakes are bad just because of a
few dangerous ones.
And what do we do with the people who really like snakes? They like snakes even more strongly than we
dislike them. These people learn about them, find them out,and watch them carefully. Why? The only reason I can
think of is that these people are open-minded.They are able to put aside differences and welcome the snake as a
friend.
Whatever the reason for our like or dislike, snakes do something good in the circle of life. They would prefer to
be left alone, and that is what we should do.If you're lucky, you might not run across more than a few of them in a
lifetime. That would be fine with most of us.
1.How does the writer describe the appearance of snakes?
A.Something even without legs.
B.Something not popular among people.
C.A person who is neutral.
D.A person who cares about nothing.
2.Which of the following shows that most people dislike snakes?
A.They welcome snakes as their best friends.
B.They would rather see a mouse than a snake.
C.They wonder why snakes can cause great fear.
D.They learn about snakes and watch them carefully.
3.Although some snakes are poisonous, .
A.they cause many people's death
B.they control the population of mice
C.they are not dangerous to people
D.they are only a small number
4.People who really like snakes are open-minded because they .
A.are able to put aside differences
B.think all the snakes are poisonous
C.are able to deal with poisonous snakes
D.take part in the poison argument

“Save the whales!” That's what the picture on Jake Smith's bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that
said something important that showed he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one
right in his own neighbourhood.
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whales' coming. A group of the animals were
swimming close to the beach in Jake's hometown. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They
were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie, but nothing they'd have to do anything about.
Then one whale swam in the direction, directly towards land. It came in with the waves, and when the waves
receded, it stayed. Its huge body rested on the sand. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer
sightseers. They had to become rescuers. A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the
whale back into the water, but it was no use.
An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery, to help move the animal.
Jake and his family couldn't do much on the beach, so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot
tea for the rescuers. At least, Jake thought, they could help in some way.
