We often hear stories of animals rescuing people. But now someone has managed to return the favour.
The event took place one snowy January morning. Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park.“As I
was walking, I just saw Jack running onto the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water
and couldn't climb out,”said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog. “Someone else told
me the lake was only one-metre deep, but it was at least twice that. I had to break my way through the 6-cm ice.
Finally, I got Jack by the neck and pulled him out. I don't think I've ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry
land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay—no one was particularly worried about me!”
A neighbor, Julie Brown, saw it all happen. “The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go
under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it, the owner
(Smith) was in the water forcing his way through the ice. I can't begin to imagine how cold it was. Everyone was
very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber—he just crawled back out, put the dog on its lead, and went
home.”
Many regard him as a hero, but Mr. Smith is quite laid-back about it. “Most dog owners are the same as me.
They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future, I'm going to make sure he's on a lead near
any icy ponds.”
Pets are members of our family. Would you do the same for them?

Last summer I went to one of the world's most famous historical places, the Forbidden City in Beijing, China.
It was the home of the emperors of the last two dynasties(朝代)in China, the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The Forbidden City was built in 1420. The palace has over 10,000 rooms. It was where the emperors dealt
with the official business with their ministers.
In Mandarin(普通话), the Forbidden City is called the Purple Forbidden City. However, the color of the palace
itself is not purple. The color purple stands for power of the great emperors of China. It was so sacred( 神圣的)that
the commoners could not even dream of ever going in.
The emperor also had some of the largest festival celebrations at the Forbidden City. During Chinese New
Year, the emperor would invite all the members of his family and his officials to a banquet. The banquet had a
hundred and eight Chinese dishes. It was such an expensive banquet that it could feed a commoner's family for
three generations(代).
Right now the Forbidden City is known as a historical site for tourists from all over the world. Everyone can
go in there. It is a museum with priceless Chinese antiques(古董)and treasures in it.

People often think of the North Pole(北极)and the South Pole as similar frozen(冰冻的)wastelands. They are
both places with very low temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not
much alike as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F,at which water turns into ice.
Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30°F.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years
ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and
difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic(北极)on foot. People who stayed there may face
many problems:very low temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few
people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard.
However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice mayoften cause many
different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water( 水 道)called“leads”.
Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.
1.This passage is probably from .
A.a book review B.a science book
C.a school report D.a computer magazine
2.According to the passage, what happened about 100 years ago?
A.Two men succeeded in getting to the North Pole.

C.The environment in the North Pole suddenly became worse.
D.The North Pole changed into thick ice because of the temperatures.
3.What does the underlined word“uninhabited”probably mean in Chinese?
A.气候恶劣的 B.充满危险的
C.困难重重的 D.无人居住的
4.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The thick ice in the North Pole.
B.A difficult trip to the North Pole.
C.The real situation in the North Pole.

Teens are gaining(① 增加)weight.Today most teenagers are at least one size larger than teens were 20 years
ago.Even clothing sizes have changed.Did you know that a small today used to be a medium 20 years ago?
A recent research shows 97% of teens need more exercise.It②’s bad news because too little exercise means
you are missing a lot of good things in life.Exercise helps in two ways.
First, exercise helps your body.Physical activity can make your body strong. It can also keep you at a healthy③
weight.Doctors say that people who stay at a healthy weight have fewer health problems.
Second, exercise can help your mind.People who get plenty of physical activity might worry less and sleep④
better at night. You may even learn better in school.Students who are healthy can listen and understand better in
class.
You can change your life and be more active at any point.It⑤’s never too late.An article called“How to Limit
Screen Time and Get Moving”gives these ideas:
Step away from the screen.Doctors call watching TV or playing video games screen time. You should have no
more than two hours of screen time a day.You will enjoy life more if you live it instead of watching it!
Start slowly. An hour a day can seem like a long time.Start with 10 minutes of new activities every day.Add
more as you get stronger.Think about walking.Take the stairs instead of the lift. You will feel healthier.
Make fitness fun.Find a sport you like.It doesn’t need to be the traditional sports of basketball, soccer,or
baseball. Those are all great sports and if you like them, play them. However, you can also try hiking, skateboarding,or
