Day 1

Each of us has something to offer to others

Most people think that they don’t have the power to change the world.

Do we have the power to impact ( 影响) other people in our lives? The

1946 US film It’s A Wonderful Life tells us the answer.

In the film, everyone has his or her own guardian (守护) angel. It starts

with George Bailey, a man who has given up on his dream and wants to

kill himself on Christmas Eve because of financial (财务的) difficulties.

This draws the attention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody. The

angel shows Bailey how different life would be for his family and his

community if he wasn’t around.

When Bailey was 12, for example, his brother Harry fell through ice

and Bailey jumped into the freezing (冰冻的) water to save him. If Bailey

had not been there, Harry would have died and would never have become

a war hero.

This movie teaches people a lesson about the power of kindness.

Bailey sacrifices (牺牲) a lot of things for the welfare (福利) of the town.

He also tries to help people living in the town achieve (实现) their goal of

having their own houses. Bailey’s kindness is repaid in the end when

almost everyone in the town comes and helps him through his troubles.

Day 2

‘City’ in a city

Huge squares, great buildings and countless treasures ( 珍宝 ) – the

Forbidden City never fails to take its visitors’ breath away.

This year, the world’s largest wooden palace is 600 years old! Have

you ever wondered who made this marvel (奇迹)?

In 1406, when the Ming Emperor Yongle decided to move the

country’s capital from Nanjing to Beijing, he started to build a palace at

the heart of Beijing. His vision (愿景) was big. It took a million workers

14 years to finish it.

Materials were sent from all over China to Beijing. Nanmu, the rarest

of all Chinese woods, was used to make huge wooden pillars ( 柱子). It

can only be found deep in forests over 1,800 km away from Beijing.

Workers had to float ( 漂浮 ) the wood on rivers all the way north to

Beijing.
