Guilin sets the stage

Guilin, a city of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, is known for its splendid natural beauty, which

makes 1 one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

Its fame is reflected in a popular Chinese saying, 2 (proclaim) "Guilin's landscape is the best under

heaven". The city has now become a new destination for theater lovers with the inaugural Guilin Festival

running from Dec 10 to 18. It will stage 29 theatrical productions, indoor 3 outdoor, at 10 locations in

Guilin. A total of 128 shows will be presented, as well as street performances.

"Guilin Festival will be held 4 an annual event. We will invite theatrical companies from around the

world to perform in the festival. It will become a platform for global artists as well as serving as an

opportunity to train young theater talent," says Yang Yanyan, head of the publicity department of Guilin,

one of the 5 (organizer) of the Guilin Festival.

She adds that, besides theatrical productions, the festival will also feature music and dance

performances.

Two Capitals, Fifteen Days, a play 6 (base) on the popular novel with the same title by

Chinese award-winning writer Ma Boyong, opened the festival with two performances staged at Guilin

Grand Theater on Dec 10 and 11. The play, directed by Zhao Miao, 7 is known for his pioneering

theatrical productions, 8 (especial) physical theater works, features 226 characters. And, as well as the

thrilling and romantic plot, audiences will also be able 9 (enjoy) a vivid scroll featuring scenes along the

Grand Canal during the Ming Dynasty.

Over 10 types of folk art are featured in the play, such as pingtan, 10 kind of storytelling and ballad

singing from Suzhou, and shadow play.

Before landfall

Only 10 hours remained before Typhoon Muifa was due to make landfall in eastern China. Su Dike

and his 1 (teammate) decided to head to Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, from Ningbo to "encounter" the

storm.

Their car hadn't been on the road long before they 2 (encounter) tire trouble and they had to 3

(immediate) rent a car and move their equipment in the rainstorm. They finally made 4 to Zhoushan and

found a good position to record the typhoon.

There were few people or cars on the road when they witnessed trees 5 (fall) down under the force

of strong winds and street lamps blinking out in the heavy rain. After some 10 minutes, the rain suddenly

became 6 (light) and the wind turned softer, meaning that they were now in the eye of the typhoon.

" 7chasing the storm, we collected a lot of data that can reflect the microscopic characteristics of

typhoons. We hope the information can help people to better understand such storms," Su says in his video,

recording this thrilling trip.

"People may think we — storm chasers — are looking for 8 (excite), but we actually shoulder the

responsibility for each chase, as we need to get to the deepest point of a storm 9 (get) first-hand data that

will help us to deal with future (climate) change," he explains.

For them, most natural events — a storm, clouds, sunset, a rainbow, lightning, hail or solar corona —

provide their own reward. In addition 10 storms and strong convection, they chase the first snow, cold

snaps, floods and dust storms.
