China's decades of change in eyes of a German family
TAIYUAN, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- After 1 (finish) a day's online English class, Steven Forster from

Forster's bond with China began in 1995 when his aunt Lorraine came 3 (work) as an English
teacher in Taiyuan. Though it has been over a decade since China began to implement the reform and
opening-up policy, foreign faces were still rare, 4 (especial) in the inland region. To Forster, his
knowledge about China was barely more than his favorite sweet-sour pork 5 (serve) in the local Chinese
restaurants.
In 1999, Forster came 6 (visit) his aunt in Taiyuan. "Taiyuan was so different from European cities. I
could always find something novel," Forster recalled. The unique oriental country attracted the whole
family. In 2001, Forster's mother also came to Taiyuan to teach English, and nine years later, Forster
followed suit. In the same year, China conducted the 7 (six) national population census, 8 showed that
the number of foreigners who had lived or would live in China for more than three months was up to more
than 590,000.
Over the 9 (decade), the German family has witnessed the impressive changes that have taken place
across China. "Chinese students used to be shy, 10 now they are becoming more confident," said Forster.
They feel that the country is also becoming more open and inclusive.
