M: It was okay I suppose I always like films with Sally writer in them. She may not be beautiful

those space rockets were coming out into the audience, and you could almost touch that rainbow,
couldn't you?

【原文】W: How are you finding New York? It must be very different from Germany.
M: Well I'm from Munich. Living in a beautiful city, like Munich is very enjoyable. New York is
so noisy and busy. But I like the people here, they are friendly to foreigners.
W: Is Germany expensive?
M: Yes Especially if you rent a house or an apartment, how about Mexico? It must be a lot quieter
than New York.
W: It sure is, but I like New York, life is much more exciting here than in Mexico. I just find it
harder to meet people here. Mexicans are much friendlier than New Yorkers.
M: Really? it sounds like a great place.

【原文】W: Good morning class. Now I'll tell you something about the history of English. Old
English is very difficult to understand. Only a few experts can read it. Several written works from
the old English period have remained. Perhaps the most famous is called Beowulf. The name of
the person who wrote it is not known. In 1066, William took control of England. The language
used by the new rulers gradually changed the way English was spoken by 800 years ago. English
became what language experts call middle English, which was used between about AD eleven
fifty and AD 1,500. Middle English sounds like modern English. Many written works from this
period have passed down. Perhaps the most famous was written by Geoffrey Chaucer, a poet who
lived in London and died there in the 1400s. Chaucer is most famous work, is the Canterbury tales
written more than 600 years ago. The history of the English language continues as middle English
becomes modern English. I'll talk about that after a short break.
