The Master of Arts Program in the Humanities(MAPH)at the University of Chicago is designed to
allow you the freedom to either focus on one academic discipline or explore interdisciplinary( 跨学科
的)interests that may not fit well within a traditional MA program. This advantage, combined with our
strong support, can help you take the next step in your professional and academic life in a short amount
of time — more than 90% of our students graduate in 9 months.
The Value of This MA Program
Master’s degrees, obtained after finishing MA programs, have become increasingly common for
admission to PhD programs and it is not unusual for an MA degree to serve as a requirement for entry
into many professional fields. MAPH also allows students to complete intensive academic work and
prepares them to continue into further graduate study or a career that much faster.
Academic Support
MAPH students are provided with academic guidance from the moment they arrive on campus. Most
often this support comes from the following sources:
·All MAPH students take a required fall quarter course taught by the MAPH Director.
·Students are placed in groups of 10-12 and work closely with an assigned post-doctoral
Instructional Professor or Teaching Fellow throughout the year.
·Over the winter and spring quarters, MAPH students work closely with a faculty member who has
agreed to serve as their thesis advisor.
·Three MAPH Mentors, recent MAPH graduates who work as staff members, are available to meet
with students to discuss course selection.
21. What is the highlight of the MAPH?
A. Interest. B. Expertise.
C. Discipline. D. Flexibility.
22. What is the potential use of obtaining the MAPH?
A. Pursuing a profitable career. B. Applying for a PhD program.
C. Publishing loads of paper work. D. Choosing undergraduate study.
23. What kind of support is available for all MAPH students?
A. Course by the director of the program. B. Group work with the MAPH director.
C. Advice on thesis writing in fall quarter. D. Help with course books from Mentors.
B
I have discovered that I have a second shadow these days as I go outside. This one, however, has
four legs instead of two. It is my daughter’s adopted, black cat: Miss Alice. Every time I go out the
door she is waiting on my front porch, meowing to be petted. Then she follows me down the hill to my
car sometimes running in front so she can get in my way for even more petting. And when I finally
return home she is there asking for attention again.
It wasn’t always this way. The very first time I saw Miss Alice she was hiding under my house just
having had a family of kittens. When I looked under there I got an angry hiss (嘘声) from her, warning
me I was in for a clawing if I got near her kittens. It took a lot of time, patience, kindness, love, and cat
food from my daughter to tame her. At first she didn’t want to be touched at all. Then she would only
allow an occasional petting. Now my daughter can pick her up and carry her up the road to her house
like a little baby. It still makes me smile to see how my daughter’s loving, caring and sympathetic spirit
tamed this wild cat and made her as lovable as the most affectionate dog.
I guess that is the power of love. It can heal a hurting heart. It can save a broken spirit. It can uplift
a sunken soul. It can free you from fear. It can transform your life. It can even take a violent, wild cat
and turn her into a puppy dog in a cat suit.
Embrace (拥抱) the love in your own life then. Welcome the love of your family and friends into
your life. And let your own love flow through everything you think, everything you say, and everything
you do.
24. What do we know about the cat from the first paragraph?
A. It enjoys staying with the author. B. It tends to be in the author’s road.
C. It is often ignored by the daughter. D. It gets well along with the daughter.
25. What does the underlined word “tame” probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Feed her up. B. Make her mild. C. Arrange for her. D. Dress her up.
26. What makes the author still smile?
A. The lovely dog. B. The daughter’s love. C. The cat’s babies. D. The harmonious family.
27. What message does the text convey?
A. Where there is life, there is hope. B A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. Love is life in its fullness like the cup with its wine.
D. Do what you fear, and fear that nature will fade away.
C
If you walked into a cinema recently, the chances are that you would have felt surrounded by
superhero movies. It seems like a new one is released every week. However, once upon a time, there
weren't any superhero films. All that changed with the release of the first Superman movie in December,
1978.
The first Superman comic book came out in 1938, and it changed the comic industry. Before
Superman, nobody wore a cape (披肩) and nobody had a big logo on their chest. He wasn't the first
superhero, but he started the so-called "Golden Age of Comic Books" and his look became the archetype
(原型) of all superheroes.
Why did people take to Superman? One of the keys is "wish-fulfillment", his creator Jerry Siegel
told CurtainUp. com. Indeed, Superman reflects many of the values and characteristics that people
admire.
Superman lives as Clark Kent, a news reporter. However, he can become the superhero whenever he
needs to. He can fly, lift any object, see through walls and melt steel with his eyes. He is selfless. He
chooses to help the people of the Earth by fighting injustices against them.
Over the years, Superman has had different types of enemies and situations, usually related to the
problems people faced. When there was a lot of organized crime in cities in the 1930s, Superman
fought bad people. When young men went off to fight Nazi Germany, Superman's motto became "truth
and justice". And after World War II (1939-1945), when African-Americans were terrorized by violent
hate groups, Superman fought against racism.
Today, Superman enjoys global popularity. We all work or study and care about our families and
friends. We see problems that we can't change. Through all of these, we struggle to do our best and also
to find personal happiness. Superman is the guy we wish we could be. He can save the world and still
get Clark Kent to work on time.
28. Why do people like superman?
A. The image of superman is cool. B. It has always been a cultural tradition.
C. Superman is popularized by news reporters.
D. People wish to be powerful enough to solve hard problems.
29. What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A. Superman's mission changes with times. B. Superman's archetype is a news reporter.
C. Superman has the power to solve all problems.
D. Superman went to Germany to fight Nazi in World War II.
30. What does the underlined word “these” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Superman's heroic deeds. B. Superman's extraordinary abilities.
C. What happens in people's daily life. D. What people see in superhero movies.
31. Which of the following does the author support?
A. Superheroes do exist in our life. B. All problems in society should be solved.
C. People find themselves expressed through Superman.
D. Superhero movies need promotion to be more popular.
D
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have been working on a fascinating
new way to identify people: using the ways of their breath. This idea could change how we unlock our
phones and access secure places.
