We are excited to announce that Brandon Hobson — author of Where the Dead Sit Talking, a National Book
Award Finalist — will judge our 2023 American Short(er) Fiction Prize.
General Guidelines
Stories must be 1,000 words or fewer. You are allowed to include up to three stories per entry. Please
submit(提交) all stories in one document. Each story must begin on a new page and be clearly titled. For the title of
your submission, list the story titles, separated by a comma.
The first-place winner will receive a $1,000 prize and publication( 出版) in a future issue of American Short
Fiction (ASF). All entries will be considered for publication. Please submit your $17 entry fee and your work
through Submittable. We no longer accept submissions by post.
You may submit multiple entries. We accept only previously unpublished works.
Submit your entry online between November 24, 2022 — February 1, 2023.
Conflicts(冲突) of Interest
Staff and volunteers currently working with ASF are not fit for consideration or publication. Additionally,
students, former students, and colleagues of the judge’s are not admitted to participate(参加). We ask that previous
winners wait three years after their winning entry is published before entering again.
About writing, Hobson has said, “I’m always more interested in language than I am certainly in plot. Most of
us who write literary fiction are interested in experimenting in more ways than just looking at it, especially a
traditional storyline or plot that we all learned in school.” With those words of encouragement and wisdom, good
luck! We can’t wait for your submissions!

Much of our thinking about health is based on wishful thinking. But science provides clear and simple advice
for a healthy life. Graham Lawton explores the evidence. Graham proves that you don’t have to be a health and
fitness extremist to be reasonably healthy. He has rounded up the latest and strictest health research and changed it
into useful advice on all the big health questions: diet, weight loss, exercise, sleep, ageing and so on.
Graham, New Scientist feature writer, is not the common health expert. He sometimes eats fast food. He has a
gym membership but rarely uses it. And he takes medicine to keep his blood pressure under control. He neither has
a diet plan nor a 6-week program to keep fit and thin.
But he does have a much better weapon: science. In a talk, Graham explains the basic science, tells people
some of the secrets of science, teaches people to use the ability of judgement to tell the good from the bad, and
helps them to see beyond the headlines. The talk allows people to eat healthily, lose weight, and sort the truth out
from science facts.
But he loves outdoor sports. Last year Graham cycled over 1,200 miles and ran the same distance of 15
marathons. He often goes swimming outdoors, walks up eight flights of stairs to his desk instead of taking the lift.
He eats his five copies of fruit and vegetables a day, keeps enough water in his body, and doesn’t eat much meat.
Despite all the bad habits, his good ones seem to be winning. Graham is 50, but his “biological age” was recently
measured as 45.
24. What can we learn about Graham?
A. He has some bad habits.
B. He has an extremely strict diet.
C. He looks down on common health experts.
D. He always bases health on wishful thinking.
25. What does Graham’s talk in paragraph 3 cover?
A. Words as weapons. B. Functions of medicine.
C. Health and science. D. Ability and confidence.
26. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us concerning Graham?
A. His indoor sports of his life. B. His copies of health books.
C. His way of thinking. D. His healthy lifestyle.
27. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Professional Ways to Do Sports
B. The Secrets of Living a Healthy Life
C. The Unique Path to Scientific Success
D. The Importance of Exercise for Health

African countries have retrieved some historic heritage, which directly reflects( 反 映 ) the important
development of human society, from European countries. Recently, Germany signed a deal for the return of
hundreds of valuable artworks from the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century, in what is today Benin.
But many artifacts(手工艺品) are still unluckily missing and some are on their way back. One such object is
an eight-legged seat from the old kingdom in Uganda. The important artifact now sits at a museum thousands of
kilometers away in Britain. The wooden seat is housed at the University of Oxford. It is one of at least 279 objects
there taken from the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom.
Apollo John Rwamparo is a deputy prime minister of Uganda. He really values country’s cultural heritage. He
requested the British to return the artifacts. Uganda officials are preparing to meet with the University of
Cambridge in Britain about the return of such historical artifacts. The school has an unknown number of artifacts
from Africa. Through many efforts, an artifact was recently to its home.
The British Museum holds a large collection of artifacts from Africa. Rose Mwanja said Uganda’s
commission had been trying hard on it and believed it could have some good effects. She is Uganda’s
commissioner for museums. She added she could start with those that are more willing to cooperate.
Many of the artifacts from Africa cannot even be found. That led to an organization started by late Congolese
art collector Sindika Dokolo. The organization offers to buy African art from collections in foreign countries. By
2020, when Dokolo died, his group had successfully recovered 15 items. However, for African governments, the
recovery of artifacts remains a struggle and will take much time.
28. What does the underlined word “retrieved” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Taken back. B. Reduced. C. Given up. D. Recommended
29. Where is the artifact of the eight-legged seat at present?
A. In Benin. B. In Uganda. C. In Britain. D. In Germany.
30. What is Uganda officials’ attitude to their country’s cultural heritage?
A. Curious. B. Concerned. C. Uncaring. D. Confused
31. Which word best describes the recovery of artifacts?
A. Frightening. B. Doubtful. C. Effortless. D. Challenging.
D
One million species face extinction, more than ever before in human history, according to a UN report
released in May. And humans should be responsible.
The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) based the assessment(评估)
on some 15,000 sources considering the causes and results of environmental changes over the past 50 years.
The findings are clear and alarming. The researchers have found that about 25 percent of the world’s plants
and animals are at risk of extinction. These include sea and land animals. Even the domesticated( 驯养的) animals
are at risk: Over 9 percent of the domesticated animal species used for food and agriculture might have been lost.
There are some big problems. This rapid decrease of the natural world endangers global food safety and
quality of life. For example, about 4 billion people rely on natural medicines, produced by the disappearing species,
for their health care. And losses of species that pollinate(授粉) plants threaten up to $577 billion in crops each year.
The researchers identified five drivers responsible for the unpleasant news. They think at the top of the list is
the change of land and sea use. The change in ecosystems towards agriculture, aquaculture and other human
developments has led to changes in the natural living space of species. It is followed by the direct overuse of
creatures (harvesting crops, cutting down the trees, hunting and fishing) and climate change, including rising sea
levels and increasing extreme-weather events, wildfires, floods and droughts. The final causes of species extinction
are pollution, especially plastics, and the spread of non-native species that can displace or kill native plants and
animals.
The researchers say it is time for humans to make a change. They think maybe a new global way to save food
and refuse waste in our life could turn the tables. Whether that is possible is an open question.
32. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of the text.
B. To introduce the schedule of the report.
C. To introduce humans’ sense of responsibility.
D. To introduce the history of human development.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly show?
A. The reliability of the findings.
B. The species of animals worldwide.
C. The seriousness of species’ reduction.
D. The risky experiences of the researchers.
34. What is the biggest threat of species’ survival according to the researchers?
A. Climate change. B. Natural disasters.
C. The direct overuse of creatures. D. Changes of their living space.
