Dear Smith,
How is everything going? Knowing that you are interested in the traditional Chinese festivals, I
am writing to introduce the Dragon Boat Festival to you.
The Duanwu or Dragon Boat Festival, generally celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month,
falls on June 22 this year. Legend holds that this festival is to remember the great patriotic poet Qu
Yuan, drowning himself after being falsely charged with a traitor. In the celebrations, the dragon-boat
racing is one of the most interesting and exciting events. People gather on both sides of the river to
watch the racers spare no effort to make for the finishing line. In the meanwhile, we often eat Zongzi,
a kind of triangular rice dumplings with various delicious fillings, which is an essential food for this
unique occasion.
The Dragon Boat Festival is approaching. Would you like to join us to spend it? Looking forward
to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua

Para 1: As the lights dimmed, Ms. Wolff walked onstage and bowed, smiling. Ms. Wolff strode
briskly to the piano and took her seat. Then she began to play. Ms. Wolff’s fingers danced across the
keys. She swung , nodded and back and forth raced her feet among the pedals(踏板). After each piece,
the audience clapped loudly. Drawn into the music, Elizabeth forgot for a moment about the six words
she had to say. The moment Ms. Wolff finished her last piece, overjoyed applause thundered through
the hall. People jumped to their feet and cheered while Ms. Wolff smiled and bowed.
Para 2: Before Ms. Wolff was about to walk offstage, Elizabeth, seizing the roses, walked slowly
towards her. She felt nervous and terrified with butterflies in her stomach. Beads of sweat trickled
down her face. “Calm down! You can make it!” Elizabeth encouraged herself. Finally, she reached
where Ms. Wolff was standing. She took a deep breath, handed the roses to Ms. Wolff and uttered in
an exciting and trembling voice, “Beaut...Beautiful flowers for a beautiful performance!” The
audience erupted into cheers again. She grinned from ear to ear, feeling relieved as she swallowed her
fear and accomplished the task.

Text 1
W: Nice and bright this time.
M: Yes, much better than yesterday.
W: The fog brought much trouble to our life.
Text 2
M: Would you like to come to a party with me tonight?
W: I’d love to. But my sister will come to see me.
Text 3
W: Hello, this is Linda. I’m ringing to say goodbye.
M: When are you setting off?
W: I’m catching the 11:35 boat.
M: Have a good trip.
Text 4
W: What’s wrong with you?
M: I’ve got a sore throat and my chest hurts.
W: Ok. Let me examine you now.
Text 5
W: May I have some time off?
M: When exactly?
W: Monday and Tuesday next week.
M: I’d like to say “yes”, but it’s just not possible.
Text 6
W: A great party, isn’t it?
M: Yes, it is. You know, Kate Grant always has the best parties.
W: In fact, this is my first time here. I only met Kate last month. She and I teach at the same school.
M: So you are a teacher? I’m wondering what you are teaching. History , Science or Latin?
W: Art. What about you?
M: I’m an engineer. By the way, my name is Tom Evans. Nice to meet you!
W: Rose Roberts. Nice to meet you, too.
Text 7
W: I quarreled with my mom this morning.
M: For what?
W: Pocket money. I asked her for pocket money, but she said she wouldn’t give me any unless I
improved my studies.
M: I see. How much pocket money do you get now?
W: $30 a month. But that’s just enough for snacks. You know, I have to buy some records for music
lessons, which cost at least $18.
M: Anyway, I think you should apologize to your mother and promise her you’ll work hard. After all,
that’ s for your own good.

W: It’s 5:00, time for home. Bill, where are you going to celebrate Valentine’s Day?
M: Valentine’s Day? Oh, I nearly forgot it. Daisy, to tell the truth, I don’t like Valentine’s Day.
W: Why? Most young people like it, especially those who are in love.
M: But you know, at such time I will have to think hard what to buy for my girlfriend.
W: That’s really a problem. Nowadays, traditional gifts such as chocolate and flowers don’t appeal to
some girls.
M: Yes. I gave Julia red roses last year, but she didn’t like them at all.
W: You can buy some jewellery for a change. Diamonds, for example.
M: That sounds great. I’m going to pick one for her now, and then I will invite Julia out for dinner.
Text 9
W: Good morning!
M: Good morning! Is this ~~ er ~~ the Student Job Center?
W: Yes. How can I help you?
M: Well, actually, I’m looking for a part- time job.
W: OK. Are you a full- time student? Please show me your student card.
M: Here you are. I’m doing a degree in London University, and I’m preparing for my graduate paper.
W: Well, let’s just have a look at what positions are available at the moment. Er,~~ there’s a job at the
Sports Center for three evenings a week—Wednesday,Thursday and Friday.
M: I’m afraid I can’t manage it because I have evening lectures.
W: Um. What about cleaning? There’s a position for a cleaner at the Child Care Center.
M: That sounds fun.
W: But you need to be there at 6:00 am five days a week. Does that appeal?
M: Six o’ clock in the morning? That’s far too early for me.
W: Hmm, well – there is a position in the City Library. It just requires working on weekends.
M: That suits me fine.
Text 10
Many American cities have nicknames. Los Angeles is one of them. Los Angeles is the second
largest city in population after New York City. Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is LA. It is
also called City of Angels because Los Angeles means “ the angels” in Spanish. Los Angeles often
has warm, sunny weather. So another nickname is City of Flowers and Sunshine. New York is called
The Big Apple. So Los Angeles is sometimes called the Big Orange because of the fruit that grows
in that city’s warm climate. The American television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it’s not
surprising that it’s called The Entertainment Capital of the World. Many films are made in the area of
Los Angeles called Hollywood. Millions of people visit the area. No trip to Los Angeles is complete
without seeing the word “Hollywood” spelled out in huge letter in a hillside. Another nickname for
Los Angeles is La- La Land, using the first letters of Los and Angeles. This means a place that is fun
and not serious, and may be even out of touch with reality.
