A year back I received a full scholarship( 全额奖学金) to attend the University of San
Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off. My mom had spent a lot in my attending a private
high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, got involved in( ) various clubs,
and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new chapter() of my life. I had totally
packed two weeks before it was time to leave.
Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn’t like what I had thought. The first two weeks
were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was so
homesick and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself
into my studies and I applied for a ton of jobs. In any remaining free time, I started forcing myself
to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think how lonely I felt.
Soon after, I began to limit food, and then I became worse. Finally, I went to see a doctor.
When the doctor weighed me, I was crazy about the number of my weight. So I continued to
lower my goal, and convinced( 坚 信 ) that controlling this number was the solution for my
homesickness. But when I was told that I had no choice but to spend time on my studies. I
quickly started recovery in my mind.
How could I do? I told myself that school was what I was best at. I decided to get rid of my
homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed by at last and I had
gotten straight(连续的) A’s. That’s why I want to share my story to help other students feel
less lonely.

A start-up company in California, called Zume, is testing machines that make pizza. The
robot takes and shapes dough(生面团) to create the base of the pizza. It then adds tomato sauce,
cheese, meat or other toppings( 浇 料 ). Next, the robot places the uncooked pizza into a hot
oven( ). A few minutes later, the pizza is ready. The pizza comes out the same each time.
Zume says the robots work quickly and do not get sick. The robots do not get paid either.
Julia Collins is the company’s founder( 创 始 人 ) and chief executive officer(CEO). Her
business can spend money on better food products because it does not have to pay the robots.
Zume is using robots to make pizza.
Charity Suzuki has bought the robot-made pizza. She likes its taste. “It’s delicious. It’s
always hot and fresh when it comes. I mean it’s great that they’re making it, but I can’t tell the
difference that it’s made by a robot versus(对抗) a human.”
Other companies say they are developing robots so people can get higher quality food faster.
But what about the jobs the robots are taking from humans?
Ken Goldberg is a professor at the University of California in Berkeley. He also directs the
school’s automation( 自动化) laboratory. Goldberg says researchers have been working with
robots for 50 years. He says that, while there has been progress, the jobs are not going to
disappear right away. “I want to reassure(使放心) restaurant workers that the skills that they have
are still going to be of value,” Goldberg said.
“We’re going to get rid of boring, repetitive(重复的), dangerous jobs and we’re going to free
up people to do things that have higher value. There’s going to be amazing new ways of working
that don’t exist yet but are going to be created.”
8. Why can Zume devote more money to better food products?
A. It earns a lot by selling pizza. B. It wants to create more robots.
C. It can save a lot by using robots. D. It hopes to attract more customers.
9. What can we know about the robot-made pizza according to Suzuki?
A. It really agrees with her. B. It is hot and fresh all the time.
C. It is tastier than the man-made. D. It is delicious and free of charge.
10. What’s the benefit of robots’ making pizza?
A. They work efficiently. B. They help sick people.
C. They need few payments. D. They produce more food.
11. What does Goldberg think of the jobs of restaurant workers?

A new report connects eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow
several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from
six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the number of
eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg.
Norrina Allen, an associate professor( 助 教 ) at Northwestern University said that, in the
United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol(固醇) in a person’s daily
food. People with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the
development of heart disease later in life. However, Allen added that she would not say that eggs
are completely unhealthy. “I’m not saying that people should take them completely out of their
food,” she said. “I’m just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount.”
Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease.
“Cholesterol’s role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30
years,” said Bruemmer, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh
Medical Center. “This study does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single
time point,” he added.
Bruemmer said, “Eggs in moderation() are probably acceptable from a nutritional(营养
) standpoint( ).” “Moderation,” he added, “is less than one egg a day, including eggs in
foods such as bread”.
