Helping others is easier than you think. You don't need to wait to become a rich man like Bill Gates to help the
poor. You can become a volunteer, you can donate your time, your old clothes and so on. And in doing so, you can
become a better and happier person.
Choose some people to support. For example, homeless people, poor children and so on. All of these are suitable.
Decide what you are able to give. Yes! Sometimes it isn't only money—you can donate your time as a volunteer,
you can donate your knowledge teaching poor children, you can donate your old clothes, you can donate food or
you can share a meal with a hungry child.
Tell people about it. Tell your friends or your children. Put it in your blog() or on your website. In this
way, the good work you do will be multiplied(增加)!
1. Is it difficult to help others in the writer's opinion?
2. Whom can you choose to support in the passage?
3. What does the underlined word "it" mean?
4. If you are a volunteer, what will you do to help the children in poor areas?
Mom and dad are the most important people in your life. They have been looking after you since you were
born, you should always love them. You should also get on well with them. But some children don't know how to
do this. Here are some ways to help you.
Spend more time with your parents. Don't spend too much time playing computer games or watching TV. Ask
your parents to play with you. Talk or go outside with them.
Be kind to your parents. You can make them happy with a smile when you come home. You can send your
mother a card on Mothers' Day or tell your father a joke on his birthday. You can also clean your room by yourself.
Work hard. If you do your best in your studies, your parents will be proud of you.

It was a Saturday morning in May. When Mrs. Edwards opened her curtains(窗帘) and looked out, she smiled
and said, “It's going to be a beautiful day.” She woke( ) her small son up at eight-thirty and said to him, “Get
up, Teddy. We're going to go to the zoo today. Wash your hands and face, brush your teeth and eat your breakfast
quickly. We're going to go to New York by train.”
Teddy was six years old. He was very happy now, because he liked going to the zoo very much, and he also liked
going by train. He said, “I dreamed about the zoo last night, Mommy.”
His mother was in a hurry, but she stopped and smiled at her small son. “You did, Teddy?” she said. “And what
did you do in the zoo in your dream?”
Teddy laughed and answered, “You know, Mommy! You were there in my dream too.”

Recently a fire burned a house down. The local police were trying to find out how it started. A man and three
children went missing after the fire.
No one knew what became of them. When the police first looked at the burned house, they did not find any
bodies. They were not sure if any people were killed in the fire.
The mother of the missing children could not find them. She did not know if they were in the house before it
burned down. She didn't see the father or her children before the fire.
The police were not sure how the fire was started. Nothing showed that the fire was started on purpose, but the
police wanted to make sure.
A home fire can be very dangerous. Many things can start a fire in the home, so it is important for a family to
keep their house safe and clean so that fires don't start.
根据短文内容,完成下列小题。
1. Do people know how the fire started?
2. Who could not be found after the fire?
3. Who saw the father and the children before the fire?
4. Why did the police go there after the house was burned down?
5. What do you learn after reading the passage?
Many people like to travel by plane, but I don't. The airport is usually far from the city. You have to get there
early and wait for hours before the plane takes off and it is often late. You can't open the window. You can't choose
the food. Planes are fast but it still takes hours to get out of the airport and into the city.
I like traveling by train. I think trains are safe. Railway stations are usually in downtown. When you are late for a
train, you can catch another one. You can walk around in the train and open the windows. You can see many
interesting things on your way. I know it takes a little more time. I also like cars. You can start your journey when
you want to, and you don't need to get to a railway station or a bus stop. Also you can carry many things with you
in a car. But sometimes there are too many cars on the roads.
1. Does the writer like to travel by plane?
