①“Why don’t you want to accept this wonderful opportunity? ”asked the boss on the phone.
② “Shall we leave now?” he whispered to us and we left the room quietly.
③ “Help! Help! I can’t swim,” screamed the frightened boy.
④ “Please don’t hurt my cat,” begged Sarah as her brother picked it up by one leg.
⑤ “ I’d like to live in a castle of my own too,” agreed the young prince.
⑥ “ Yes. I bought a car and a new flat this winter,” my father replied.
⑦ “ Are you coming with us?” shouted Li Ming to her friends on the other side of the room.
⑧ “ I didn’t like that meal at all,” complained the customer.
⑨ “ Perhaps you would like to go this way?” suggested the man shyly.
(2) 适当使用 with/without 这个介词。
The potential house buyer came with confidence.
The man answered without hesitation.
With the lights on, the elderly woman left the room.
With a book in his arm, he left the room.
With so much work to do, she will have a hard time.
With so much work done, she felt relaxed.
We thanked the elderly couple and felt a sense of warmth, deeply moved.
The owner smiled, saying, “ Tell me why you need this house.”
③“May I ask why?” I asked, surprised.
He gave her the child to hold. Lovingly, she kissed the baby on its forehead with her cold white lips, then stared
wildly around the room, fell back—and died.
His mother was sleeping when he woke up. Joyfully, he slid out of the room.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Exhausted and hungry, I wondered if we could find our way bac
k.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Afraid that I might hurt the lovely creature, I automatica
lly let out a cry to stop my horse.
It is not mony but love that matters.
I want to give it to those who can fill it with love instead of money.

As a fourteen-year-old girl, you may think that the biggest problem you can probably face is failing one of your
classes in high school, but not everything is as easy as it seems. My parents are going through a lot lately. We
recently moved from Houston and bought a house in Dallas, and my dad had almost no money left in the bank due to
the fact that he had to pay the water and electricity company in order for them to be available in my house.
My brother, who was a nice, happy, free-caring six-year –old boy, just like every other, started to become very
distant from us the first week we moved into the house. As much as we tried to ask him what was wrong, he
wouldn’t tell us. I was really confused by the way he acted, because he normally was a nice and kind little boy who
would often go out and play with the neighbours and would just be outside, enjoying the day. That little boy
completely turned around and became a very distant, cold child. He would keep silent and sit in his room the whole
day with the door closed. He would not go out even for supper, and we were wondering what happened.
We went to talk to his teacher who said that he was very shy when it came to talking in front of the other kids,
but he had developed a little confidence and started to play with the kids in his class. The teacher mentioned that he
and a kid from a higher level started ‘‘hanging out” away from the rest of the kids. My mum thought of it as a good
thing, thinking it meant that my brother had started to make new friends, but I knew it meant something else. I tried
talking to my brother even though he didn’t want to, but he didn’t say anything dealing with the bigger kid.

Paragraph 1:
Until one day, he came home, crying, and it seemed I was the only one who noticed. My brother ran to me
crying badly and I noticed a huge cut in his arm. I asked him what had happened. At first, he would not tell me and
when I gently comforted him and examined the cut, he stopped crying and held me tightly. Again I asked him to tell
me everything. He still kept silent and would not say a word. I asked if the bigger kid had bullied him.
Paragraph 2:
After a while, he gave in and started telling me that the bigger kid had stolen his lunch. I told him everything
would be OK. And I told him if anything had happened, he could tell our parents and me. So we went into the living
room and told my dad and mom about it. Our parents also felt sad and nervous, but my brother told them not to
worry. The next day we went to see the teacher and told him the whole thing. He soon called the bigger kid’s parents
and they apologized to us and my brother felt as happy as before.
