Last Friday,the British organization PDSA gave out its gold medal for bravery—to a rat named
Magawa. Magawa,and other
rats
like him,are saving
countless lives by
sniffing

these rats were trained to discover landmines. The training takes

Magawa is
an African rat which

they will accidentally set off a mine.
Magawa
is taken
out

minefield,which he
carefully walks
over.Magawa's
main
trainer,Malen,leads
him
carefully across the field. When Magawa finds
a mine, he

it, showing
that he's found something.
Malen
says that Magawa is very
confident
in

works quickly and

Most
little girls love
dolls. When 17-year-old
Ariella Pacheco was
growing up,she
was no exception.
Since kids often love dolls that look like themselves best, the doll that American Girl Pacheco chose for
herself
looked really like herself.
Children find comfort and connection
from dolls that show their own physical
feature.However,children whose medical conditions make them look different from common people have
little or no hope of finding their
likeness at
a toy store or even online.
Knowing how important making that very personal connection could be for a child gave Pacheco an idea.
After hearing of doll designer Amy Jandrisevits'“A Doll Like Me”project that makes dolls for disabled
children,
Pacheco decided she would design and make special dolls for children with special medical conditions.
To find the kids she hoped to create special dolls for,Pacheco got in touch with Fresh Start Surgical
Gifts in California,a children hospital
which
provides medical
treatment to
children
who
need
it for free.
Then
Pacheco was sent pictures and information for a number of disabled girls. She finally chose four.
Michelle Pius,Fresh
Start's
doctor
was“blown away”by the final product.“It
was a very kind and big-
hearted
action to make
dolls that will help
a child
feel like they're
not
alone,”she
said.
Before getting started,Pacheco searched YouTube
for
doll-making classes,and
read up on
the
girls’ favorite hobby and preferred
color.Her
goal was
to make
sure the kids could see
themselves in the
dolls,but
she didn't want the things that make them different from other children to be the dolls' main feature.
“Each
of these kids
is
so
special...I hope through these dolls they can
see themselves
in
a new light and
really love
themselves,”Pacheco said.
