Elizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821, and moved to New York City when she was ten years old. One day
she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth
century. After writing many letters asking for admission(录取) to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a doctor in
Philadelphia. She was so determined that she taught school and gave musiclessons to get money for the cost of
schooling.
In 1849, after graduation from medical school, she decided to further her education in Paris. She wanted to be a
surgeon(外科医师) , but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the idea.
Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman. By 1857
Elizabeth and her sister, also a doctor, along with another woman doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women

Water goes around and around Earth in a never journey called the water cycle(循环). The sun heats up lakes, and
oceans, and other wet places on the Earth. When the water gets warm enough, it changes into vapor. Plants also give off lots of
water vapor. Some of this water vapor cools off high in the sky and becomes clouds. The nit falls back to Earth in a new place
as rain or snow. This cycle happens over and over again.
The ground can absorb water like a sponge(海绵). If you could see this groundwater, it wouldn’t look like a lake or
river. The groundwater is mixed in with the rocks and sand that lie in layers(层) below Earth’s surface.
Groundwater moves along slowly. How slowly? Maybe 1.5 kilometers in one century. Some of this water has been
underground for thoughts of years. And once groundwater is pumped out of the ground from a deep
well(水井) by people, it may take hundreds of years for water to take its place.
9. In which order does water go around Earth?
a. fall down as rain or snow b. heated up by the sun on lakes, oceans and other wet places
c. cool off high in the sky d. form cloudse. change into vapor

There is no doubt, when you received the praise, you felt good----and when you received the
criticism(批评), you felt upset and wanted to reject (拒绝) it. Clearly, we don’t want to be seen as failures, so we’d
rather close our eyes and cover our ears than have to take any criticism from others.
However, by doing our best to avoid being criticism, we allow ourselves to travel on a never-ending highway of
mediocrity(平庸). Without receiving negative feedback(反馈) and criticism from others, our growth stopped and our
opportunity disappeared. Launched in 2010, the Microsoft KIN smartphone only lasted on the market for 48 days despite its $
1 billion development and marketing costs. It was only after the phone went on sale that it became quite obvious that most 15
to 30 year-olds preferred Androids, BlackBerrys and iPhones to the Microsoft KIN. If criticism and feedback had been
received by the developing group while the phone was in development, Microsoft could have avoided the huge embarrassment
and financial(经融的) loss that occurred.
Just to be clear, I’m talking about constructive criticism. Feedback that helps makes us stronger. If you always think
you’re right but don’t get feedback from anyone else, how do you know for sure that what you’re doing is any good? Listening
and acting on honest view will tell you exactly what you’re doing well---and what you can do better. This type of feedback
forces you to evaluate your actions and the way you work. If you use constructive criticism wisely, it can guide you away bad
practices(常规做法) and move you towards good ones.
The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism. Fortunately, you now
have the keys to help you move away from seeking praise--- to instead, seeking constructive criticism. And once you start
putting these keys to use, you’ll unlock the doors to a whole new way of learning, developing and succeeding.
12. What does the first paragraph express?
A. The benefits of taking criticisms from others. B. The differences between praise and criticism.
C. The true feelings of being praised or criticized. D. The responses to positive and negative
comments(评价)
13. What lesson can we learn from the Microsoft KIN smartphone?
A. Good opportunity is an important part in our growth.
B. Early criticism is necessary for future success,
C. Good preparation is an effect way to deal with problem.
D. Too much money for developing is not a good thing.
14. What benefit can we get after receiving others’ feedback?
A. Making us better B. Encouraging us a lot
C. Making us more cautious D. Giving us more confidenc
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Why criticism is better than praise. B. Who need criticism instead of praise.
