Since the U. S. National Park Service (NPS) started keeping records in 1904, its mountain landscapes, seaside
wildernesses, and high desert acres have registered more than 16 billion visits. These 3 parks are the superstars of
the system, but they offer just a glimpse of the variety listed in the 429 park units of the NPS.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Established: 1934
Visitor Centers: Oconaluftee, Sugarlands, Cades Cove
Entrance Fees: $20 per vehicle for parking, $10 per person
The Smokies are known for their incredible biodiversity; it’s said that moving from the lowest to highest
elevations within the park is the biological equivalent of traveling from Georgia to Maine. More than 1, 500 species
of flowering plants, 240 types of birds, and around 50 kinds of fish live there.
Grand Teton National Park
Established: 1929
Visitor centers: All four are open from spring to fall; check the website for specific dates. Every center except the
Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve Center issues boat permits.
Entrance fee: None
Today, adventure athletes travel to the park to climb historic mountaineering routes, backpack into wildflower-
strewn basins, or ski down advanced backcountry slopes in winter. But the park is also ideal for leisurely activities
like biking, photography, and canoeing—set against the backdrop of the meandering Snake River, numerous lakes
and streams, and the Grand Teton range.
