Kiwis are unique in a lot of interesting ways. They have many characteristics that are not
found in any other bird.
It is assumed that the kiwi’s ancestor was able to fly and reached New Zealand. Once on the
island, it lost its ability to fly and eventually became the kiwi known today. Kiwis have feathers
that look like hair and very strong and muscular legs. They rule the ground instead of the air. They
can smell very well. Kiwis are quite shy and usually only come out at night. Kiwis can live a long
time, between 25 and 50 years.
A female kiwi carries a huge egg about its body size. The kiwi is about the same sizse as a
chicken but its egg is actually six times as large as a chicken’s egg. The reason for this is that the
kiwi doesn’t have to fly, so there aren’t any limits on its weight. The female has to eat three times
as much as usual to help the egg develop. Right before the egg is laid she can’t eat anything
because the egg presses against her stomach, leaving no room for food.
All kiwi species are endangered. On average, twenty-seven die each week. They have been
affected most by deforestation and invasive mammals. Before humans came to New Zealand, the
only mammals on the island were bats and seals. The kiwi never had to worry about predators
before, but now since it cannot fly, and lays its eggs on the ground, it is pretty defenceless against
invasive mammals such as rats and stoats. Stoats kill a lot of the chicks, while dogs kill a lot of
adult birds, usually by accident, because they are quite delicate(脆弱的).

Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long.
And if he senses that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
The same is true in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at
yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will
feel angry towards others’ staring at you that way. Eye do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different
when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10
seconds and refuses to move his gaze, his intentions are obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her
attention, to make her understand that he admires her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in a conversation is that the speaker
will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay
attention to what he is speaking, and to tell him that he is attentive.
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate you, you will
feel uncomfortable. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking to long at the victim, since he
believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. Quite
the contrary.
In fact, continuous eye contact is confirmed to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each
other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words cannot express.
Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationships between two people and
the specific situations.
4. Which of the following behaviour is proper according to the passage
A. To the opposite sex, stare at him or her.
B. To a stranger, avoid looking at him or her.
C. In a conversation, look at the listener all the time.
D. Make eye contact depending on the relationships and different situations.
5. If two persons exchange eye contact gently for a long time, what is probably their
relationship?
A. Boss and employee.
B. Lovers.
C. Teacher and student.
D. Strangers.
6. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Don’t Stare at Others B. Body Language Is Important
C. Eyes Can Speak D. Eye Contact Benefits You

Other cultures can be different from ours in many aspects! They can eat different foods and
live in different types of houses. People probably speak different languages and have beliefs and
customs very different from ours. However, they can also be similar in ways of connecting with
each other. We sometimes call these means of communication universal languages.
Some legends hold that, thousands of years ago, there was a single language spoken by
everyone on Earth. It is fun to think about a time when everyone might have been able to
communicate in the same language though historical evidence does not support this, of course.
Today, there are thousands of languages spoken around the world. Yet, there are some means
of communication that go beyond words and allow people from wildly different backgrounds to
communicate and share emotions and feelings. For example, some people believe music is a
universal language. There may be some scientific support for this idea, too. Experts have learnt
that, across cultures, people can recognize three common emotions in music: happiness, sadness
and fear.
So what other types of universal languages might there be? Some people believe dance is a
universal language. Along with music, dancing seems to be a common interest shared by people
all over the world. Do you think you could see a dance from another culture and make some
reasonable guesses about the ideas and emotions behind it? We bet you could!
Another universal language that you might not have thought of is math! If you think about it
now, though, it just makes sense. The value of pi is roughly 3.14159 no matter where you are on
Earth, likewise, figuring out the value of something involves the same mathematical calculations,
regardless of whether you’re counting in dollars, pesos or coconuts.
7.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
