Every year, millions of people watch tennis games to celebrate the spirit of tennis. Here are four major tennis
events, which are also known as the Grand Slam tournaments(大满贯赛事), helping you know the sport better.
The US Open
The US Open, the fourth Grand Slam of the tennis year, has its roots in 1881. It is held at the USTA Billie
Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, usually between late August and early September. Played on hard
courts, the US Open is known for its hard playing surface, which rewards powerful serves and aggressive play.
The French Open
The French Open, also known as the Roland- Garros tournament, dating back to 1891. It is held annually at
the Stade Roland- Garros in Paris, typically between late May and early June. The tournament is played on clay
courts(红土网球场), which are known for slow pace and high bounce, favoring players with strong baseline play
and good sliding performance.
The Australian Open
The Australian Open or the AO, the calendar year's first Grand Slam, began in 1905. It has evolved into a
major event in professional tennis playing, held annually in Melbourne, in January. Played on hard courts, the AO
is famous for its hot and often windy conditions, which test players' adaptability and endurance(忍耐力).
The Championships, Wimbledon
Known for the grass courts, it has been held since 1877 in Wimbledon, London, which is also celebrated for
its fast play and the strict tradition of wearing all- white attire( 服装). The tournament takes place annually in late
June and early July. Its unique seeding system and the high honour associated with winning the title make it one of
the prizes each wants in tennis.
